Rainbow appears upon completion of oil painting of Boston Light as seen from Hull, MA

Susan Fusco-Fazio

My main body of artwork is derived from the landscape. I paint outdoors during spring, summer and fall, onsite like the Impressionists. During the winter months, I paint in my studio working from observation on still life, interiors, and figurative subjects. I mainly use oil, watercolor, and acrylic paints, but my art practice also includes drawing, printmaking, and ceramics.

Artist Statement: A Love of nature through Paint

My art studio is outdoors in nature. I paint en plein air, on site out in the elements. I primarily paint the coastal landscapes, seascapes, marshlands, and gardens on the South Shore and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I first developed a love of painting nature in my hometown of Branford, on the Connecticut shoreline. After I discovered the work of Claude Monet’s waterlily series, I began to paint views of scenic long Island Sound. Later I earned a BFA in painting with a concentration in art education at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. I travelled to New Mexico and resided in Lake Tahoe to paint the western mountains. My artwork is often series driven. I paint my favorite scenes repeatedly in various weather conditions, at different times of the day throughout the seasons. While working tirelessly, I aim to capture the nuances of light and color, the rhythms and essence of a particular place on a given day, portraying one moment in time. When painting my gardens, I strive to capture the complex interconnections between flowers, plants, trees, earth and sky. I do not idealize nature as I paint both the gritty and the beautiful, fresh blooms and wilted flowers, cloudy, stormy and sunny days that are tranquil or wild and windy. When I am finished with a painting, I respectfully thank the landscape. It is a great honor and a joy to paint out in nature.
